Pedicle screws

Bone fragility and its susceptibility to fracture could come from a variety of reasons such as osteopenia or osteoporosis. Moreover, implant loosening is typically associated with weaker bone. Although structural reinforcement through bone cement infusion is not a particularly new method, we developed a new pedicle screw that acts both as a scaffolding device and an access port to deliver bone cement (PMMA) in the same device; this not only reinforces weak bone, it also improves fixation of the implant itself. The device was designed to withstand cyclic loading from compressive, bending and torsional forces that it will encounter through its lifecycle.
